Relationship….ME!

The Most Vital Connection: Ourselves

Let’s emphasize that again: The most crucial relationship we have is with ourselves.

This is a reminder to me and everyone reading: the bond we share with ourselves is paramount. It took me four decades to grasp the significance of self-relationship. I’ve always held love for myself, but only recently did I realize the depth and importance of this connection.

I’ve been labeled ‘weird’ for as long as I can remember. What made me weird was never clear to me; it was just a part of who I was. As a child, the desire to fit in is strong, and standing out felt uncomfortable. I faced bullies, not understanding their animosity or their pleasure in causing me distress. Yet, as Janelle Monae sings in “I Like That,” even through tears, I knew my worth. Like any child, I yearned for acceptance, often compromising my own values to gain approval – a strategy that never truly worked.

A pivotal moment in high school taught me a valuable lesson: I am enough on my own. I needn’t tolerate mistreatment for the sake of companionship. However, this realization was fleeting, as I repeatedly found myself in similar situations. One notable incident involved a friend who openly disrespected me, yet I continued the friendship for years after.

Relationship… Me: Embrace Your Authenticity

‘Relationship… Me’ is fundamentally about self-love. Recognize your own worth. If others can’t see it, that’s their loss. Embrace your uniqueness – your ‘weirdness’. In doing so, you’ll attract those who appreciate the real you. Cultivate a positive self-image, avoiding the trap of comparing yourself to others. Remember, external appearances can be deceiving.

This concept extends beyond physical self-care to mental well-being. In a world filled with outwardly ‘perfect’ individuals, internal turmoil is often hidden. It’s crucial to guard your mental space and peace. For instance, don’t let others’ negativity disrupt your tranquility. A simple scenario: you’re enjoying time with your partner, a friend calls, and their dissatisfaction or envy sours the mood. Remember, their circumstances are not your responsibility.

Relationship… Me: It’s About You

Finally, ‘Relationship… Me’ is exactly that: about you. While considering others in your decisions is natural, the final choice is yours. This is especially relevant for mothers. It’s okay to aspire to more than just motherhood and partnership. You were an individual with dreams and goals before assuming these roles. It’s not only acceptable but necessary to pursue personal aspirations.

In essence, we have one ‘self’, and if we don’t prioritize our well-being, no one else will.
